a research institute is a university without BSc students: academic level research and publications (mostly patent-related). hii is a non-profit research institute without shareholders, so not focused on patents but directed towards advancing scientific knowledge. The aim is total freedom of research direction, not limited by academic disciplines and not limited by patent outcomes
“The Alchemist” by David Teniers the Younger (c. 1650)
The alchemist was a popular theme in Flemish painting of the sixteenth and seventeenth century. He symbolises the man who squanders his money on futile, trivial matters and is therefore reduced to beggary. Conversely, some interpret the alchemist as a learned scholar, surrounded by books and instruments, reflecting the 17th-century view of alchemy as a precursor to modern science and a new form of intellectual pursuit.
initiate independent research collectives
hii supports research collaboration: a great innovative research proposal is worth little without external feedback. Doing research costs more than just journal/software access, human time and effort can be accounted for by hiring freelancing research assistants through hii.
hii provides a meeting place for (academic) researchers to initiate independent scientific research projects – like an efficient online research institute.
Inspired by the diabetes pathology and through an understanding of the brain-gut axis, an analogy for human brain metabolism is introduced.
down -> top idea flow
hii research assistant -> PhD proposal -> PhD trajectory prepares doctoral researchers much better for their first publication. It allows an instant start once the PhD candidate is hired and can begin their research work directly, without needing to do preparatory (literary) research.
state- and federal-level funding budgets are dependent on political agenda of current government. Commercial research institutes are dependent on patent results and therefore do not have complete freedom of research direction either. Inherently causes top-down approach of idea flow, while there is little opportunity for down-top flow of innovative research ideas.
only budget required is a fair compensation for BSc graduates/MSc students working freelance for 3-9 months as a hii reseach assistant. This can be crowd-funded or state-funded and should pay for rent at least. Allows for down-top flow of research proposals & ideas from BSc, MSc, PhD graduates and up.
founding team
hii was launched on the 1st of September 2025 by a team of experts from academia and research institutes from Europe (Belgium and the Netherlands). Among us are PhD candidates and research engineers from industrial research institutes. Scientific / industrial inquiries through <apply@hiinstitute.org>
21st century research is moving towards computational modeling studies and theoretical/fundamental science, where large physical labs with expensive equipment are no longer a requirement. the only required resources will be scientific journals and software packages (fortunately, both journals and software companies are moving towards more open-access/open-source models). Scientific research does not have to be limited to the classical academic institutions.
